What is self development? It is the process of becoming self-aware and developing the ability to direct your mind to enhance your talents and potential. Self development means learning to design your future consciously and deliberately instead of unconsciously allowing others to design it for you. Many people look for a quick fix for the aspects of themselves they don’t like (such as procrastination) but there is no quick fix. It takes commitment and dedicated practice. But it’s not drudgery! …
Getting past the conscious mind into the subconscious is the only way to effectively deal with mental, emotional and physical habits. Your conscious mind will always get in the way of change. It will protest, “You can’t do that, you’ve always done it THIS way! Change is BAD! This way is much easier!” And besides, the minute your conscious mind is occupied with a complex task that requires attention, you miss the subconscious trigger to perform your habitual behavior and you perform the action automatically. If you catch yourself, it may already be too late to stop.
What is enlightenment and how do you know when you’ve attained it?
The word is itself contains “light” – or the light associated with God or Universal Consciousness.
In a secular context, enlightenment means the “ah-ha” moment when you fully understand something. In spiritual terms, you achieve understanding of the meaning and purpose of life and communication or one-ness with all creation and with God, and the realization of our own divine nature. In both cases, the experience is ecstatic and joyful.
Imagine brain development as a “Y” shape. The stage of infancy and early childhood is at the base of the Y. The junction of the column and the two arms of the Y represent a 10-year old child who functions consciously in alpha without going to sleep. The arms of the Y represent the subjective and objective realities – and most people function primarily on one arm of that Y or the other. The Silva Method allows you to develop the mental mastery where you have equal access to both arms of the Y. You will have all of the wisdom and knowledge you have acquired throughout your life, and you will be able to think outside of your own box. You will achieve your goals more easily as you learn to use whole-brain thinking.
Progressive muscle relaxation: this relaxation technique focuses on slowly relaxing each muscle group. Your mind becomes busy focusing on the difference between muscle tension and relaxation. This is especially noticeable when you’re stressed and you keep relaxing, and relaxing, and when you think you’re as soft as melted ice cream, the muscle relaxes even more!

The Silva Method’s Sleep Control technique. This exercise is a modern version of counting sheep. It uses the RAS as well as intense focus to put you to sleep. It works very effectively: you slowly count down from 100 to 1, focusing your attention on mental repetition of the word “deeper” and visualization of a chalkboard in which you systematically erase the numbers as you count down. Anytime your attention drifts, bring it back and resume counting down. Boring! And effective.
A person who walks into a social situation and owns it, masterfully controls his or her fears and insecurities; when others avoid eye contact and hide in the shadows, the confident person takes control of their emotions and goes ahead with what they want to achieve – to interact with other people.
If your mind is like a runaway train of thoughts about things that worry or stress you out and it keeps coming back to these topics whenever it feels like it, you are not in control. If your mind stays focused on what you want to focus on and doesn’t get sidetracked with worries or drama, you are in control.
Would you rather have a mind you control, or a mind that controls you? Easy answer, but it takes a bit of work to master the mind so you can use it as the marvelous tool it’s intended to be.
If you remember a dream, you confront your issues – your fears, your actions, your beliefs – and you can expand on this by keeping a dream journal.
