How do you know if you’re going through a spiritual awakening? It’s not like walking through a door and <poof> you’re awakened. It’s a process. Your individual experience may be very intense or gentle. You may experience these symptoms of spiritual awakening:
1. Changing sleep patterns. You need more, or less, sleep than normal. If you need less sleep, it may be because you are “lighter,” at a faster vibration. If you need more sleep, you may be processing old issues. These issues are stored in your body and sleep is the best way for your body to “reboot” and heal. If you wake up routinely around 2-3 AM, don’t fret. Dr. Wayne Dyer has called them “God’s business hours.” Use this time to meditate and have conversations with your higher self. You can also use the Silva Method Sleep Control exercise to fall asleep and get the sleep you need; and the Glass of Water exercise to program your mind to hunt for solutions while you sleep.

2. Emotional ups and downs. The emotional roller coaster isn’t a fun ride. The best way to deal with this is to acknowledge the emotions and let them pass. An emotion only lasts 90 seconds from the time a thought triggers it to the time it courses through your system…IF you don’t attach to the thought and intensify that energy. For example, if you feel anguish about a breakup, you can either wallow in the emotions (making yourself feel worse) or you can acknowledge them, feel them as they surge through your body, and release them. Spiritual awakening involves healing of past emotional trauma. You learn forgiveness, detachment and transcendence. You realize that you are not your emotions. There’s a remarkable difference between saying, “I am sad” and “I feel sad.” When you understand that difference, you are awakening.
3. Increased intuition and creativity. You have very strong urges to do something. You’re comfortable listening to your heart and taking the appropriate action. Dreams are more vivid or lucid. Inspiration comes frequently. The barriers between you and intelligent consciousness are coming down, so it’s no accident that you are getting information from outside your physical senses. Your physical senses are heightened too. Your life experience becomes multi-dimensional by integrating what you perceive from the nonphysical and what you perceive from the physical. Use the Silva Method Dream Control exercise to get the most from the information that comes in dreams; becoming a lucid dreamer lets you actively participate and understand these sometimes cryptic messages. The Silva Method also teaches you to develop your intuitive powers.
4. Weird or unusual physical sensations. You may feel tingling sensations or slight pressure on the top of your head as your crown chakra opens. You may experience illness or skin eruptions as stored negative emotions are released, much like some people report flu-like symptoms after a deep tissue massage (be grateful for this!). Please consult your doctor if any condition persists or worsens as there may be other causes. You may feel intensely energized one day and lethargic the next. Be kind to yourself when you’re feeling run down and take advantage of those bursts of energy and do what you love to do.
5. Changes in your spiritual practice. Your practice is different. You may not need to meditate or pray for as long, since you’re in more constant communion with Consciousness. Or, you may have a strong urge to meditate for much longer because of a yearning for purpose, connection, unity, meaning and inner peace. This may be new to you (many people need to experience a certain amount of life before they feel the need for spiritual connection). Follow your heart, listen to intuition and you will be well-guided on a spiritual track that resonates with you.
6. Life-altering events like divorce, job change, catastrophes, death. As devastating as these can be, they may be necessary for your growth and awakening. They have a way of causing you to re-evaluate your life and your purpose, and awakening you to the true nature of life. You find your purpose in life. Latent skills emerge and you develop the skills that support your passion and purpose.
7. Wanderlust or desire to break free from old patterns. Many people experience a desire to quit their jobs and follow their passions; get rid of all toxic and draining relationships; and let go of the consumptive lifestyle in favor of simplicity and purpose.
8. Desire to create. Creative inspiration can come at an overwhelming rate. Carry a notebook, smartphone or iPad to record inspirations! The more awakened you become, the more they appear, and you begin seeing patterns pointing you toward your purpose. Take advantage of periods of intense creative flow. Creativity is the life force!
9. Teachers, guides and small miracles appear everywhere. You recognize that people in your life have certain lessons to teach you. Be aware of patterns, “coincidences” and synchronicities. Be aware of your surroundings. Anything that catches your eye does so for a reason. Always ask, “why was I made aware of this?” You feel that you’re constantly “downloading” information. You may sense the presence of spirit guides.
10. A feeling that you aren’t yourself, that you’ve changed. You are still you – but you have released negative thought patterns, beliefs and behaviors you used to identify with. You are more aware of your energetic being, and sense the presence of beings of other dimensions. You feel that you ARE light and love.
11. A sense of Oneness. Compassionate, unconditional love for all life. Moments of joy, peace and bliss become commonplace. You feel especially attuned to animals and Nature.
12. You efficiently manifest your thoughts and desires. You recognize that all thoughts, positive or negative, are prayers and you direct them to what you want. The Mental Screen is one powerful visualization/ manifestation exercise that is part of the Silva Method.
These are just some of the ways that you can tell you’re in the midst of a spiritual awakening. It’s a fascinating, illuminating journey, so enjoy it!
