visualization technique bubblesThere are numerous mind tools and techniques to aid a person in getting the most out of life. Visualization is one of those tools, and can be learned rather quickly. A person can use this tool to see being successful at obtaining a goal or certain outcome in any given situation. This is a powerful tool that has been used successfully by many athletes, business people, and others from all walks of life. There are different exercises to learn that will help you to focus and not let other ideas or intrusions creep into your mind while doing the technique. To begin with you need to find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and where there is not much background noise. You shouldn’t be able to hear the TV or radio or any other noise. Begin with deep breathing exercises in which you breathe in deeply through your nose and slowly out through your mouth.

Exercise 1 – Butterflies

Begin to imagine yourself lying on your back in the grass. You see the clouds above you, the trees around you, and feel the warm sunshine on your body. You begin to see butterflies floating around, one at a time. Imagine the first one is bright yellow. You see it appear in your vision and slowly fly off out of your vision to the side of you or behind you. The next butterfly comes into vision but this one is purple. You see it flying over your head and in front of you like the last one, until it too disappears out of sight. The next butterfly is orange and does the same thing as the first two. It flies around allowing you to enjoy its beauty, and then flutters off into the distance. Repeat this sequence of yellow, purple, orange several times. This will allow you to use your mental imaging to see the butterflies as they might be, but by altering the colors in a specific sequence your mind will be taught to go in order. This will aid you when you are visualizing for yourself in the future.

Exercise 2 – Bubble Popping

bubbles This exercise is much like the butterfly exercise except that it requires you to use another one of your senses. You begin by thinking of yourself in a dark, quiet place. Off to your left, you hear a bubble pop. It is soft and subtle in sound. Then, you hear the same thing to your right. You then hear a bubble pop behind you, above your head, and in front of you in this sequence. Repeat this for several minutes in the same order. Again, it is important to stay focused on the task and not let other thoughts or noises creep into your mind.

This exercise allows you to open your mind to the sounds you may hear when you are visualizing something you want to do or a goal you want to accomplish. It helps to train your mind to not just see the actions you will perform, but to hear the noises that may go along with it.

Exercise 3 – Sense of Touch

The sense of touch exercise is to help focus on tactile objects and how they may feel. To start, imaging standing at a counter or table with an apple, a book, and a piece of sandpaper in front of you. You pick up the apple and notice the weight of it. You feel how smooth it is in your hand. As your hand glides over it, you feel the stem and how stiff it is. At the bottom of the apple you notice the how the sepal has dried and may feel hard to the touch. Mentally put down the apple and pick up the book.

Notice if the book is heavy or light when you pick it up. Does it have a rough cover or does it have a dust jacket? Flip through the pages and notice the breeze they create on your face. Feel the binding and both covers. As you put it down, pick up the sandpaper.

Rub your fingers gently over the sandpaper. Notice the grainy feel and how your fingers get stuck as they try to glide over the paper. Feel all of the little bumps and notice how some are higher than others. Turn the sandpaper over and feel the smoothness of the back in comparison to the front. During this exercise, stay focused on the feeling you experience.

Using these visualization tools can help you learn how to focus when visualizing something you want for yourself. The better you get at visualizing abstractly, the easier it will be to visualize getting what you want out of life.
